L’abbazia di San Galgano an old cistercian abbedy, situated about thirty kilometers from Siena, in Chiusdino.
The location is made up of the hermitage (known as “Rotonda di Montesiepi”) and the large abbey, now completely ruined and reduced to the only walls, which is a very important tourist destination. The lack of the roof – that highlight the articulation of the architectural structure – compare our abbey with the abbey of the Melrose, Kelso and Jedburg in Scotland, Tintern in Wales, Cashel in Ireland, Eldena in Germany, Beauport in Paimpol (Brittany) and Convento do Carmo in Lisbon. In Italy, we can compare it with the “Incomplete of Venosa” (Potenza).
The sword in the stone belonged to Galgano Guidotti, a brave knight born in 1148 near Chiusdino. Galgano decided to follow God’s word and retire as hermit near his native country.
According to the legend, once he arrived to the place, he stuck his sword into the stone to use it as a cross for his prayers.
Over the years, hundreds of people tried to extract and steal the sword. In the chapel you can see what is believed to be the mummified hands of a thief who, in an attempt to extract the weapon, was crushed by wild wolves.
